Creativity is Humanity’s Fundamental Trait
Welcome to Edition #07 of THE BLUEPRINT
This marks halfway of our 14-week series - therefore, I would like to share a message I find very important.
Problem solving, outside of the box thinking, adaptation, unique perspective, and innovation. I find these characteristics to be fundamental to humanity and are themes visited numerous times as we evolve throughout history. As we progress in time, we continue to pursue greater technologies, solve larger problems, and continue to adapt to change in progressive ways - this is the human spirit.
But there is one trait that stands central to everything listed above; our most useful and productive asset as humans:
Creativity
I define it as ‘the utilization of collected information in a unique manner.’
There are two steps in unlocking creativity:
Step 01: Learn how to collect information
Most of the accomplished humans (artists, inventors, directors, leaders) throughout history learnt to collect information strategically. Whether it is as intense as collecting magazine bits in an on-the-go scrapbook like Andy Warhol or Walt Disney, or as simple as Marcus Aurelius’ ample time spent towards gratitude to begin his famous ‘Meditations,’ the act of collection forms our perspective. We become aware of what we care about, like, dislike, find beauty in, and resonate with.
Information collection creates 2 things:
Collecting information frequently enables perspective framing, extremely important for anyone looking to create something (I remind you of Ed. #03 where I state the purpose of our life is to create value: we should all be creators). The more focused you can become on what speaks to you, the better you will be at seeking this out, and the more probable you will find gaps in which you can provide value.
Your connection with the world will begin to strengthen. A deeper observance will put you out of your own shoes. Further empathy, curiosity, and insight will enter your life and you will be able to find interest and beauty in little things.
Step 02: Begin to create
Find an outlet where you apply your own presence. Before I lose you to the thought of making TikTok dance videos, here are 10 other ways you can create:
Start a business
Begin photography
Play the guitar
Curate a playlist
Start a Bible study
Make meals for your friends
Establish a Facebook group around a hobby
Write an essay on a topic you care about
Create a photo series
Develop a game
Importantly, I urge you to find a way to share your creation. Whether this is a small group of friends or attempting to go viral, you will position yourself as a leader. While the opinions of others do exist, the benefit of seeing the world from a creators view instead of a consumer’s is well rewarded.
Creativity is what makes us human. Begin to flex this muscle and watch as your perspective flips inside out - truly, the world is waiting for what you can offer.
Take Action:
Right now, assess where you often intake information that motivates, inspires, or you feel called to. Find a way to capture this information and revisit it.
To save digitally, I enjoy Cosmos. It is like Pinterest for creatives. This is the link to download: https://www.cosmos.so/ and here is the link to my profile: https://www.cosmos.so/spencer.abts
I look forward to your creations!

“The creative process:
Discover - Read a lot. Observe the world. Notice
Collect - Immediately record anything that strikes you.
Generate - Build on your notes to brainstorm lots of ideas.
Combine - Connect previously unconnected ideas.
Refine - Edit, edit, edit. Select the best.”
