AI Introduction Perspective
Welcome to Edition #01 of THE BLUEPRINT
Hold on tight - I’m diving right in.
What does the mass introduction of Artificial Intelligence look like for those not studying it every day? For many, this shift is daunting. The current state of AI has been compared to the internet in 1996. It’s going to be a massive change that affects every industry.
So, how do we prepare?
Before we look forward, let’s take a look back. Imagine farming a field by hand with a large team, each skilled worker managing one acre a day. The next day, machinery comes in and handles 50 acres with just one worker. The introduction of machinery causes a huge boost in productivity.
It’s a simple analogy, but we’ll see a similar productivity burst with AI. A system that can parse data and provide actionable insights will drastically improve efficiency across all industries. The businesses that don’t adopt will fall behind.
The competitive advantage will be unfair:
The first businesses to adopt this technology will thrive, while their competitors lag.
The job market will also change.
What to keep and eye on:
Cybersecurity, machine-learning engineering, and data science will experience massive growth. Also, watch where big data exists - this is where AI will be most impactful.
Consider the farmer skilled in hand-picking crops. Once valuable, his skills were replaced by machinery, and suddenly, he was out of a job. The person who thrived understood machinery.
Stay vigilant about your education and supplement it where necessary:
School, at its core, is meant to develop us into productive members of society who can work efficiently. Great! But traditional education teaches us to fit roles that exist today - or that existed when the professor entered the workforce. As businesses and society evolve, the school system often lags behind.
We can’t expect traditional education to teach us about the future of technology.
How to get started immediately:
Online Courses: Coursera, edX, and Udacity
AI News Websites: VentureBeat AI, The Verge AI, and AI News
AI Books: “Artificial Intelligence: A guide for Thinking Humans” by Melanie Mitchell and “Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies” by Nick Bostrom
AI Thought Leaders on Socials: Andrew Ng (Founder of DeepLearning.AI), Demis Hassabis (Co-Founder & CEO, Google DeepMind)
Experiment with AI Tools: GPT-4, DALL-E, Codex
Don’t be the person whose job gets replaced by AI or who wishes they’d studied it before the technology boomed.
Let’s be proactive and prepare for the swell.
Additional Note:
I didn’t create this newsletter to teach you the ins and outs of Artificial Intelligence. The resources above will do that. The following 13 editions will focus on something I believe is even more important: building a mindset capable of growing faster than your competition. The frameworks and mindsets shared will help you handle any challenge with poise. Whether AI disrupts your industry (this will happen) or a unique conflict arises, these lessons will be powerful for your life.
Best,
Spencer A.
